Swinerton provided general contracting services for the renovation of the Ofelia Miramontes and Leonard Baca Education Building. Work included the renovation of four levels, including classrooms, teaching labs, offices, conference spaces, restrooms, corridors, and support spaces for the School of Education. Access was improved within the building and the connection to the existing tower and classroom building was strengthened. Work was performed in two phases to allow parts of the building to remain occupied during construction. Swinerton self-performed framing, drywall, and cleanup.

Swinerton provided general contracting services for the construction of a new four-story academic building. Edward J. Ray Hall features seven specialized classrooms, 12 state-of-the-art laboratories, engineering space, a machine shop, maker space for art, and staff offices. The building supports the University’s ever-growing four-year programs focused on science, technology, engineering, art, and mathematics (STEAM). A new outdoor amphitheater was also built. It offers gathering space for students and faculty and serves as a connection from Edward J. Ray Hall to the future Student Success Center.

Edward J. Ray Hall utilizes a mass timber structural system and incorporates a wide variety of Oregon-manufactured wood projects, including glulam beams and columns with cross-laminated-timber floor panels. The selection of mass timber for the building’s structural system reinforces the University’s robust commitment to sustainability by utilizing locally sourced renewable material and adopting the low-carbon footprint associated with its production. Certified net zero, the building’s actual annual delivered energy is less than or equal to the onsite exported energy.

The University of California Riverside (UCR) Student Success Center (Project) is a new facility of 60,000 GSF / 39,000 ASF. The purpose of the Project is to address UCR’s growing student population and its shortfall in classroom capacity. UCR envisions the Project to increase utilization of instructional and student space and uphold UCR’s academic mission through its explicit focus on “student success”. The Project consists of three primary program elements:

General assignment classrooms designed for modern pedagogies and technology;
Multipurpose student life spaces for use by student organizations, and areas for scholarly activity such as tutoring, mentoring, and study;
Dining Services space (shelled) for the development and fit-out of a new dining concept on campus.

The overall goal for the Student Success Center is to create a visionary and transformational facility that supports education and student success through active learning, collaboration, and community building, while also responding to the external site and climate conditions in a manner that integrates the building into the surrounding campus landscape. Bringing together classrooms and student life space, the Project has a unique opportunity to create highly utilized instructional, collaborative, and social spaces by capitalizing on synergies between these two facets of the student experience.

The University envisions the Project to be a showcase piece; a unique and dynamic location that becomes the number one stop on the campus tour. While function and practicality are key, the facility shall also inspire creativity and create a memorable place, one that engenders a deep emotional attachment for the students, faculty, and staff who inhabit the space. Located at the prominent intersection of the Arts Mall and Carillon Mall, the Project shall be a gateway building, providing an enhanced identity to the Academic Core.

The Administration and Allied Health Facility (AAHF) at the University of Hawaii West Oahu (UHWO) campus consists of a two-story 43,442-square foot learning and office facility. Designed by architecture firms Perkins+Wills and KYA Design, the newly constructed building features the gable roof style that draws upon the architecture of sugar mills that once dotted Oahu, while the exterior masonry incorporates angular patterns that recall those on kapa, or traditional Hawaiian bark cloth, while the expansive second floor lanai features architecturally designed wood slat ceilings. Prior to its construction, UHWO Human Resources and administrative staff were based off-campus until the AAHF building was completed. The new Administrative and Allied Health Facility now provides substantial office space to sustain the programs of the growing campus and a brand new facility that will foster the health sciences program for many years to come.
